Training: One-on-ones

Organizing depends on building relationships, and one of the most useful techniques for building relationships is the one-on-one.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • conduct a 1-1

Preparation

To conduct your training, you might:

Process

I Check-in

  1. Ask participants how they are doing

  2. Explain the goals of the session

  3. Explain the agenda

  4. Ask if there are any questions about the videos or guide

II. Observe 1-1

  1. Conduct a one-on-one and allow participants to watch

  2. After the one-on-one explain what you thought went well, didn’t go well

  3. Ask the participants what they noticed and what questions they have

  4. Ask participants if they feel ready to try, or if they want to observe more

  5. Schedule a time for the next one-on-one

III. Try one-on-one

  1. Have participants conduct a one-on-one with you observing

  2. Congratulate the participant on their first one on one

  3. Ask them what they thought went well, what they want to do differently next time

  4. If the participant has missed something important, suggest 1-3 constructive tips on what they can try next time

  5. Help them schedule the next one-on-one if possible

  6. Congratulate your participants again on their first one-on-one

IV. Evaluation

After the training, each participant should write:

  • What they learned

  • A rating from 1-5 about how well the training helped them learn.

  • At least 1 I-like & I-wish about the training.

You should also write a short reflection on:

  • What you did, what worked well, what didn’t work well, and what you will change about the training next time.
